Why should I pay for college? No thanks #31WriteNow
Time and time again the tuition dance pops up in conversations with family members and loved ones. I’ve evolved from boldly reciting the mantra that "the best school is free school" to a less convicted "well… I guess if you think it’s worth it, and your family wants to spend it, go for it." But that doesn’t feel so fulfilling because I simply don’t run in circles where people can afford to write a $40,000 tuition check. So when we tell college aged kids to go to the best school they can get into, if the family will go bankrupt over this kid’s tuition, we almost always consider that collateral consequence in our motivation. That’s either too much emotional pressure on the kid, or too much financial pressure on the family. I don’t know how to handle these feelings as an aunt to college age teenagers. to be continued…
MOOCs! They’re going to hollow out higher education. Coursera, Edx, Udacity now offer world-class classes from amazing faculty for free. It will truly change higher education and make it affordable. I really believe that.
BTW – on a different matter, Twerking will go mainstream as soon as Pat Boone’s video comes out. 😉
